Location Matters
Barrett Technology’s location supports its success in innovating, fabrication-outsourcing, assembling, testing, and marketing innovative robotics solutions.
One of Barrett’s most important attributes is its location. The two historic economic drivers of the New England (Northeast US) economy are manufacturing and advanced research. Barrett occupies 1,000 square-meters (10,000 square-feet) in Newton, MA, USA, near schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. The Greater Boston Area boasts 70 colleges and universities with the first in the US (Harvard) founded in 1636. Barrett has regular access to bright students as interns through MIT’s Undergraduate Professional Opportunities Program (UPOP) and Northeastern University’s Cooperative-Education (Coop) Program, both alma maters of Barrett’s founder and CEO. Barrett also has ties with the Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics (LPR) at the University of Massachusetts, in Amherst, and Olin College of Engineering, in Needham. At MIT, Barrett has close access to professors, staff, laboratories, and offices, including the Computer Science and Artificial Laboratory (CSAIL), the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity, the Laboratory for Electrical and Electronic Systems (LEES, formerly EPSEL), the Media Lab, the Technology License Office (TLO), the Industrial Liaison Program (ILP), and the Venture Mentoring Service (VMS). We also work closely with Prof. Jack Derby at the Derby Entrepreneurship Center at Tufts University.
Though an engineering-driven company, manufacturing is integrated into every aspect of Barrett’s environment. Within proximity of Newton, the immediately surrounding New England region has a deep history of industrial manufacturing. New England’s abundant streams for water power, raw materials, coastal-port access, and pioneering immigrants who embraced risk, were crystallized even before the industrial revolution. Today, thousands of industrial fabricators carry forward the enduring cultural tradition of “Yankee ingenuity” developed over four centuries of industrialization. Barrett’s manufacturing operations outsources much of its fabrication to dozens of these partners, several of whom have worked with Barrett for decades. Though we have customers in 30 countries across 6 continents, with support partners worldwide, Barrett’s New England location is indeed fortunate.
