How can Burt® help me?
Burt is built to support treatment for a variety of conditions
Stroke
A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted. Without oxygen, brain cells begin to be damaged within minutes. Because the brain controls how we move, think, and speak, the effects of a stroke can vary depending on where it occurs.
Many stroke survivors experience changes in movement, especially in the arm and hand. This can include weakness, stiffness, or difficulty controlling motion. Some people also notice challenges with coordination, sensation, or completing everyday tasks.
With Burt®, your arm is safely supported while you move through guided, functional activities. The system can gently assist when movement is difficult, or add resistance as you get stronger. This allows you to stay actively involved in each motion, which is an important part of recovery.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States, but with consistent therapy and the right tools, many people regain meaningful movement and independence.
Spinal Cord Injury
After an SCI, tasks like reaching, grasping, or lifting everyday objects can become more difficult, and movements may feel less controlled or more fatiguing. Burt® supports therapy by guiding arm and shoulder movement in a safe, controlled way. It can provide assistance when movement is limited and gradually adjust as strength and control improve. By practicing functional activities, you stay actively involved in each movement while working toward more consistent, confident use of your arm.
A spinal cord injury occurs when damage to the spinal cord disrupts communication between the brain and body. This can happen suddenly, such as from a fall or accident, or develop over time due to certain medical conditions.
Depending on where the injury occurs and how severe it is, people may experience weakness or loss of movement, changes in sensation, and difficulty coordinating the arms and hands.
Traumatic Brain Injury
A traumatic brain injury happens when a sudden force or impact to the head disrupts normal brain function. This can result from falls, sports injuries, or other accidents, and the effects can vary widely depending on the area of the brain involved.
Movements may feel slower, less precise, or harder to plan and complete. Even familiar tasks can require more focus and effort during recovery.
Burt® helps you practice smooth, repeatable movements with the right level of support. The system can assist or challenge your arm based on your ability, helping rebuild coordination over time. Therapy activities are designed to feel purposeful and engaging, while progress is tracked so you and your care team can see how your movement improves from session to session.

What Makes Burt® Different
Burt® is designed to work with you, not for you.
Unlike wearable robotic systems that attach to your arm, Burt® uses an end-effector approach — meaning your hand and arm interact with the device at a single point, rather than being enclosed in it. This allows your arm to move more naturally, without being constrained by rigid joints or alignment requirements.
Your arm is fully supported, allowing you to move more comfortably while staying in control of each motion. The system can gently assist when movement is difficult, or add challenge as you get stronger, helping you stay actively involved throughout therapy.
