"In the continuing effort to build machines that can do things better than humans, MIT researchers have created the Whole Arm Manipulator (WAM). The three-foot appendage uses very sensitive tracking cameras attached to fast-acting precision motors. WAM is so quick, in fact, it can grab a major-league fastball. No one expects the robot to take the place of Carlton Fisk; more likely, WAMs will be used for precision manufacturing in hazardous waste environments."
